Buxar, a district steeped in history, is closely linked to the Ramayana, featuring Lord Ram, Sage Vishwamitra, and Devi Ahilya. Located on the banks of the Ganga and Karmanasa rivers, it has a rich heritage and significance in modern Indian history, particularly due to the battles of Buxar and Chausa. Administratively, the Buxar district was established in 1991.

The judicial history of Buxar began on 7th February 1974 with the creation of the Sub-Judge Court. The Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate started on 14 March 1992, followed by the inauguration of the District & Sessions Judge Court by Hon’ble Chief Justice Sri Bimal Chandra Basak on 11 December 1992, with Sri Dinanath Prasad as the first District & Sessions Judge. Presently, Sri Anand Nandan Singh serves as the 19th District & Sessions Judge.

The district judiciary has its principal seat at the district headquarters and a Sub-Divisional Court at Dumraon, comprising 31 courts at the headquarters and three at Dumraon. Buxar houses three court complexes with a total of 31 courts, including Fast Track Courts, a Record Room, and an Alternate Dispute Resolution Complex inaugurated on 24 December 2016. In 2019, a Child-Friendly Court was established. Equipped with the latest technology, Buxar courts conduct proceedings both physically and virtually. On 15 December 2023, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Arun Kumar Jha inaugurated “Nyaya Vatika” and the renovated “Witness Shed.”
