Chengalpattu district, established on 29 November 2019, was formed from the erstwhile Kancheepuram district. This region, historically linked with Kancheepuram, flourished under various rulers like the Pallavas, Cholas, and Vijayanagara Empire. Notably, the fortress at Chengalpattu, built in the 16th century by Vijayanagara kings, played a crucial role during British and Hyder Ali conflicts. The district, with a coastal length of 57 km along the Bay of Bengal, experiences a tropical wet and dry climate. It receives around 1400 mm of annual rainfall, mainly during October and November from the north-east monsoon. Major rivers like Palar, Adyar, and Ongur traverse through the district, supporting its extensive irrigation system.

Post-independence, Chengalpattu served as the headquarters of the combined Kancheepuram district until 1969. The district was later divided into Kancheepuram and Tiruvallur in 1997. In 2019, Kanchipuram district was further bifurcated, forming Chengalpattu district. The Chengalpattu District Judiciary, established on 3 March 2024, comprises nine taluks: Chengalpattu, Alandur, Tambaram, Pallavaram, Tirukalukundram, Madurantakam, Thiruporur, Cheyyur, and Sholinganallur.
