The legal history of Kanpur before British rule reflected a blend of personal laws of various religions, governed by the criminal and revenue systems of successive rulers. With the advent of the British administration, the East India Company introduced a structured judiciary in 1801, establishing civil and criminal jurisdictions under District and Sessions Judges. By 1836, the district had five munsifs, which were later reduced to two, overseeing different tehsils. The enforcement of the Indian Penal Code and Criminal Procedure Code in the late 19th century marked significant reforms in justice administration. Post-independence, the city’s growth led to the establishment of additional courts, and in 1976, Kanpur was declared a metropolitan area with two session divisions.
The District Court Kanpur Nagar, comprising an old and six-story main building constructed in 1990, is among Uttar Pradesh’s largest judgeships. It houses 89 courts, including six Family Courts, two Motor Accident Tribunals, and a Commercial Court, with magisterial courts headed by the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate.
