Madhubani district was established on 1 December 1972, carved out from the old Darbhanga District during a state reorganization. It was the northern subdivision of Darbhanga, bordered by a hilly region to the north, Darbhanga to the south, Sitamarhi to the west, and Supaul to the east. Madhubani is central to the territory once known as Mithila and has maintained its distinct identity.

There are no significant prehistoric sites, though remains of early aboriginal populations, such as the Tharus, are noted. Dr. Suniti Kumar Chatterji’s work “Kiratajanakirti” suggests that Kiratas inhabited the district, a fact supported by references in the Mahabharata. Before Aryanisation, the region was dominated by aboriginal populations who worshipped Shiva. The Janaka family, promoting Aryan culture, integrated local Shaiva beliefs. The kingdom of Videha, ruled by the Janakas, included much of Madhubani.

Traditions suggest the Pandavas stayed in the region during their exile. The village of Phulhar is believed to be where Sita worshipped Devi Girija before marrying Ram. Several sages and scholars, such as Kapil and Vishwamitra, are associated with the district.
