Malda district was formed in 1813 by combining parts of Purnia, Dinajpur, and Rajshahi districts. A separate treasury was established in 1832, and a full-fledged Magistrate and Collector were appointed in 1859. Initially, the district judiciary of Malda was part of the Sessions Division of Jalpaiguri. On 1 April 1956, a dedicated District & Sessions Judge took charge. The Sessions Division of Malda included West Dinajpur until 16th May 1983, when an independent Sessions Division for West Dinajpur was established through bifurcation.
Malda has one sub-division, Chanchal, where courts were set up at Chanchal Rajbari. The Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate, a Judicial Magistrate, and the Court of Civil Judge (Junior Division) at Chanchal were inaugurated on 15th September 2012 by Hon’ble Justice J.N. Patel, the then Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court. These courts are now fully operational.
