Pathanamthitta, formed on 1 November 1982, is Kerala’s 13th district, deriving its name from ‘Pathanam’ (row of houses) and ‘Thitta’ (riverside). Initially part of Kollam, Alappuzha, and Idukki districts, it now has 22 functioning courts. The District Court began in 1984, with the Principal District Court located in the Mini Civil Station, Pathanamthitta. Additional courts, including the Fast Track Special Court (POCSO) and the Motor Accidents Claims Tribunal, were established over time.
The Family Court was inaugurated in 2013, and the Gram Nyayalayas in Ranni and Pandalam (2016) further enhanced the district’s judicial facilities. Other key courts include the Sub Court, Munsiff’s Court, and Judicial First Class Magistrate Courts at various locations like Thiruvalla, Adoor, and Ranni.
