Sitamarhi Judgeship is about 140 km from Patna, located on NH-77 at Dumra, which is 5 km south of Sitamarhi and 50 km from Muzaffarpur. Situated within the Tirhut Commissionery, Sitamarhi lies on the banks of the Lakshmana (Lakhandei) river, which divides the township into two parts connected by several bridges.

Initially part of Muzaffarpur district since 1875, Sitamarhi became a revenue district on 11 December 1972. The Judgeship was established on 9 April 1977 as per notification SO 388 dated 14 March 1977 and a letter from the Law Department, Government of Bihar, dated 1 April 1977.

Records show that the Local Bar Association, formed on 1 January 1927, has archives dating back to 1926, including the first judgment in Title Suit No. 45 of 1926. Initially, courts and administrative offices were located in Sitamarhi but were moved to Dumra in 1936 following the 1934 earthquake.

The Sub-Judge’s court was set up on 5 July 1971, with Shri Banke Bihari Prasad as the first Subordinate Judge. The present Judgeship encompasses Sitamarhi and Sheohar districts, with Sheohar becoming a district on 6 October 1994.
