The District Courts in Uttarakhand, established by the State Government in consultation with the High Court, operate under a three-tier system. The highest court in each district is the District and Sessions Judge Court, which handles civil and criminal matters, including session cases and Motor Accident Claims. Additional District & Sessions Judges may be appointed based on workload. These courts derive their jurisdiction from The Bengal, Agra, and Assam Civil Courts Act, of 1887, and the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973.
Subordinate courts include the Chief Judicial Magistrate and Judicial Magistrate Ist Class courts, with Additional Chief Judicial Magistrates in some districts. Civil matters are handled by Civil Judges (Senior Division) and Civil Judges (Junior Division) with specific pecuniary jurisdictions. Family Courts, Labour Courts, Consumer Forums, and Juvenile Boards are also established in various districts. Additionally, special tribunals like the Transport Appellate Tribunal and Commercial Trade Tax Tribunal function in the state.
