Mahabubabad, formerly known as Manukota, derives its name from “Mranukota,” where “Mranu” means “tree” and “Kota” means “fort” in Telugu, translating to “a fort made of trees.” In earlier times, the area was densely covered with trees, resembling a natural fort. The name changed to Mahabubabad after the visit of Nizam ruler Mahabub Ali Khan, who stayed at a place called “Shikarkhana” near the town before Independence. Over time, the name evolved to Mahabubabad.

The district’s Court system began with the establishment of the District Munsiff Court during the Nizam era (1347 Fasli – 1937). Later, in 2014, the VI Additional District and Sessions Judge’s Court was set up, which was re-designated as the Principal District and Sessions Court in 2022 after the bifurcation of judicial districts. The district also has several other courts, including the Special Court for POCSO cases, the Senior Civil Judge’s Court, and the Junior Civil Judge’s Courts.
