The District Court of Khammam, established on 22 June 1955, currently comprises 35 courts, including District, Senior Civil, and Junior Civil Judge Courts, alongside two taluka courts at Sathupalli and Madhira. Initially functioning from Trunk Road, it was relocated to its present premises in 1975. The judicial district underwent bifurcation in 2022, creating Khammam and Bhadradri-Kothagudem districts. The name “Khammam” traces its origin to the Narasimhadri Temple atop Stambhadri Hill, with the town’s name evolving from “Kambamettu.” Historically, Khammam was part of Warangal District until 1953, later reorganized under the Mandal system in 1985.

Khammam is rich in cultural and historical heritage, boasting sites like the 950 AD Khammam Fort, Kusumanchi’s ancient Sivalingam, and temples like Bhadrachalam’s Sri Rama Temple, Telangana Chinna Tirupati, and others built during the Kakatiya dynasty. The district is also known for the Godavari River, coal mining by Singareni Collieries, and religious significance at places like Parnasala and Kallur.
