Ariyalur District was established following the bifurcation of Perambalur District as per G.O.(Ms)No.683 Revenue(RA1(1)) Department dated 19.11.2007. It has been functioning as a separate district since 23 December 2007. Geographically, it is bordered by Cuddalore to the north, Thanjavur to the south, Cuddalore and Thanjavur to the east, and Perambalur and Tiruchirapalli to the west. The district comprises two revenue divisions: Ariyalur and Udayarpalayam, and four taluks: Ariyalur, Sendurai, Udayarpalayam, and Andimadam (formed as per G.O.(Ms) No. 167 Revenue(RA1(1)) Department dated 08-05-2017).

There are 195 revenue villages within the district. Additionally, Ariyalur District includes six blocks: Ariyalur, Thirumanur, Sendurai, Jayankondam, Andimadam, and T.Palur, encompassing 201 village panchayats. It also has two municipalities: Ariyalur and Jayankondam, and two town panchayats: Udayarpalayam and Varadharajanpettai.
