Chamba shares borders with Jammu and Kashmir to the northwest and west, Ladakh and Lahaul-Bara Bangahal regions of Himachal Pradesh to the northeast and east, Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, and Gurdaspur district of Punjab to the southeast and south.
In the past, justice flowed from the ruler, who appointed judges, magistrates, and Munsifs, serving as the ultimate court of appeal and even exercising original jurisdiction. With British rule, death sentences required confirmation by the commissioner of Lahaul. Following the merger, Chamba Estate formed a separate district with a court presided over by the Sub-Judge, initially filled by Sh. Dhani Ram.
Over time, the judiciary expanded, with the appointment of various Senior Sub Judges-cum-Assistant Sessions Judges like Sh. Bansi Dhar Sharma, Sh. H.D Kainthla, Sh. C.S Sautha, Sh. A.N Bhoil, and Sh. S.S Mittal. Notably, Chamba was part of the Mandi Civil and Sessions Division until 1966 when it joined the Kangra Civil and Sessions Division, leading to circuit Courts established for appellate matters.
Further developments saw the creation of additional judicial positions, such as Sub Judge in Dalhousie and Civil Judge cum JMIC in Tissa. Currently, Chamba District hosts six judicial courts, representing the evolution of legal administration in the region.
