Champhai Court, previously known as the Addl Sub-ordinate District Council Court, traces its roots back to 7 January 1965, when it was inaugurated by Mr. J. Malsawma, who served as its first Magistrate.
Initially housed in a three-story concrete building along with an adjacent single-story Assam-type building at Tlangrawt, Champhai Kahrawt, both owned by Mr. RT Thana, the court operated with limited resources. Over time, with the separation of the Judiciary from the executive in 2005 and further organizational changes in 2010, the Champhai Court evolved into the Court of Civil Judge, Champhai, handling a variety of cases including civil and criminal matters.
With the expansion of its responsibilities, the court underwent significant changes, including the adoption of modern infrastructure under the eCourts project. However, the existing premises became insufficient to accommodate the growing needs, prompting the construction of a new two-story building. Subsequently, the court relocated to a plot of land owned by the Industries Department in Champhai Zote, approximately 11 kilometers from the town center.
The establishment of Champhai Judicial District on November 11th, 2021, marked a milestone, positioning Champhai Court as the third Judicial District within the State of Mizoram. Led by Mr. Liansangzuala as the first District & Sessions Judge, the court oversees various courts, including Special Courts, Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, and Courts of Chief Judicial Magistrate, Senior Civil Judge, and Judicial Magistrate First Class.
Presently, Champhai Court operates under the guidance of four judicial officers and a dedicated team of regular and provisional staff, ensuring the effective administration of justice within the region.
