Cuddalore District, located in Tamil Nadu, is an ancient and historic region, originally part of South Arcot district until its bifurcation on 30 September 1993. The district is named after its headquarters, Cuddalore city. The name ‘Arcot’ is derived from the Tamil ‘Aaru Kadu,’ meaning “six forests,” believed to be the abode of six rishis. Cuddalore spans 3,678 sq.km with a 68 km coastline and is known for its fishing industry, agriculture, and industries like sugar and chocolate manufacturing. It has a tropical climate, with summer from April to June, monsoons from July to October, and winter from November to February.

Cuddalore is vulnerable to natural disasters due to its coastal location, facing cyclones, floods, and the devastating 2004 tsunami. The district has experienced severe damage from cyclones like Nisha in 2008 and Thane in 2011. It is also prone to floods caused by cyclonic depressions. Despite these challenges, agriculture (including jackfruit and cashew nut farming) and industries remain the primary livelihoods for its people.
