The earliest known chieftain of the Dharmapuri region during the Sangam era was Adigaman Naduman Anji, who supported the poetess Avvaiyar. In the 8th century, the Pallavas controlled northern Salem, with the Ganga Pallavas later ruling the western parts. By the 9th century, the Rashtrakutas influenced the region, followed by Chola domination. The Cholas, after briefly facing a defeat from the Rashtrakutas, gained control over the region until the Hoysalas rose to power in the 12th century. By the 14th century, the Vijayanagara Empire expanded southwards, including Salem. After the fall of Vijayanagara in 1565, the region passed under various rulers like the Nayaks, Marathas, and Mysore kings.

In the 18th century, the British engaged in conflicts with Hyder Ali and Tippu Sultan over the region. By the early 19th century, the British had seized most of the Salem District, including Dharmapuri, which remained part of Salem until it became a separate district in 1965. Dharmapuri was later bifurcated into Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts in 2004. The first Collector of Dharmapuri was Thiru G. Thirumal I.A.S.
