The origin of Fazilka dates back to 1844 CE. Following the Amritsar Treaty of 1809, the East India Company sought Maharaja Ranjit Singh’s consent to establish a boat pier on the Sutlej River at Ferozepur for access to Karachi Port. The request was denied, prompting the Company to task Mr. Patrick Vans Alexander Agnew with finding an alternate site downstream. He discovered the horseshoe-shaped Lake ‘Badha’ and set up camp on its Southern Periphery, where a bungalow was built in 1844, later known as “Bangla”.
In 1846, Mr. J. H. Oliver took charge and convinced Mian Mohd. Fazil Wattoo Lambardar to donate land for a township around the bungalow. This led to the emergence of Fazilka as a trading hub for raw wool. The town, named after Watto Lambardar, flourished further when the British Raj established a rail link for dispatching wool bales to Karachi.
Despite its prosperity, Fazilka faced challenges post-partition and during the Indo-Pak wars. However, it regained momentum when rail services between Fazilka and Abohar commenced on 16 July 2012. Presently, Fazilka thrives as a key center for rice export in India.
Declared a district by the Punjab Government on 27 July 2011, Fazilka encompasses three Sub-Divisions and three Sub-Tehsils. It is renowned for its 305-meter steel TV tower, nicknamed “Fazilka Eiffel Tower”, and continues to evolve administratively since its inception. Strategically located near the India-Pakistan border, with the River Sutlej flowing through, Fazilka is a pivotal city in South-Western Punjab.
