Narmadapuram, formerly known as Hoshangabad, became a civil district in the Central Provinces in 1904, with a court of the District Judge and other subordinate courts, such as the courts of Sub-Judges and Munsifs. Tehsildars in Sohagpur, Harda and Seoni (Seoni Malwa) were also entrusted with judicial responsibilities for minor cases. By 1931, the jurisdiction of Narmadapuram extended to Harda, Betul and Narsinghpur.

It had courts for District and Sessions Judges as well as First and Second Class Subordinate Judges. After independence, the district retained its civil jurisdiction, with the reorganization in 1959 extending the authority of the District Judge to Betul and Narsinghpur. Courts were also established in Itarsi, Pipariya, and Seoni Malwa, while the regular court at Pachmarhi was converted into a Link Court. The present Narmadapuram Court building was completed in 1908-09.
