Idukki District, located in the eastern part of Kerala, is the state’s second-largest district by area. The Idukki District Court, established in 1978, has jurisdiction over the taluks of Devikulam, Peermade, Udumbanchola, and Thodupuzha. The judicial headquarters is situated at Muttom near Thodupuzha. Before the formation of Idukki in 1976, these taluks were part of the Kottayam District.
Idukki’s judicial history dates back to 1914 when the Munsiff Court was established at Devikulam. After independence, the court system expanded with the addition of courts in Nedumkandom, Adimaly, and Idukki between 1980 and 1983. In 1993, a Sub Court and Magistrate Court were started in Kattappana. Two Fast Track Sessions Courts were introduced in 2001, which were later converted into Additional District & Sessions Courts. Family Courts were also established, with one at Thodupuzha in 2012.
Idukki’s courts serve an area marked by significant geographical diversity, with most of the district lying at an altitude of 2,500 to 6,000 feet above sea level. The Devikulam Court is located at 6,000 feet, making it one of the highest courts in India.
