Katni, located in central Madhya Pradesh, serves as the headquarters of Katni district, which was part of Jabalpur until April 1998. It was declared a district on 28 May 1998. The district blends cultural influences from three regions: Mahakaushal, Bundelkhand, and Baghelkhand. Katni is also referred to as “Mudwara” due to various historical stories. One popular belief is that the railway junction’s half-circular turn near the wagon yard led to the name Mudwara. Another theory links it to a village called Modwar, rewarded for bravery in ancient times. During British rule, it was infamous for public hangings of criminals, which may have influenced the name.

The District and Sessions Court in Katni was established on 1 April 2002, with Shri Sharad Srivastava serving as the first District and Sessions Judge. Katni district comprises seven tehsils: Katni Mudwara, Vijayraghavgarh, Bahoriband, Dhimarkheda, Barwara, Rithi, and Barhi. Civil courts currently operate in Vijayraghavgarh, Dhimarkheda, and Barhi. This district holds a unique cultural and historical significance in the state.
