The Court of the District and Sessions Judge, East Jaintia Hills, Khliehriat, was established following the separation of the Judiciary from the Executive on 12 August 2020. On this significant day, the bifurcation was inaugurated by the then Hon’ble Chief Justice of the High Court of Meghalaya, Hon’ble Mr. Justice Biswanath Somadder.
The Court of the District and Sessions Judge includes (i) the District and Sessions Judge, who also holds additional responsibilities as the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial), Special Judge (POCSO), etc.; (ii) the Chief Judicial Magistrate, who also serves as an Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner and Secretary of the District Legal Services Authority; and (iii) the Judicial Magistrate First Class, who also has additional duties as an Assistant to the Deputy Commissioner and Principal Magistrate of the Juvenile Justice Board.
Under the jurisdiction of the District & Sessions Judge, East Jaintia Hills, Khliehriat, the courts handle both civil and criminal cases. Their authority is derived from the Code of Criminal Procedure, the Code of Civil Procedure, various Special Acts, as well as from the Rules for Administration of Justice and Police in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills District, 1937, and the Khasi Syiemship (Administration of Justice) Order, 1950.
