During the Mughal period, Kishanganj district was part of Nepal and known as Nepalgarh. Mughal Emperor Shah Alam appointed Mohammad Raza to administer Surjapur. Mohammad Raza captured the fort of Nepalgarh, renamed it Alamganj, and shifted administration to Khagada.

During the tenure of Khagada Nawab Mohammad Fakiruddin, a Hindu saint arrived but refused to enter Alamganj due to its name and the name of the river Ramzan. To accommodate the saint, the Nawab renamed the area from Kishanganj Gudri to Ramazan Pool Gandhi Ghat as Krishna-kunj, which later evolved into Kishanganj.

Kishanganj, originally a subdivision of Purnea, became a separate district on 14th January 1990, following a seventeen-year struggle by local social workers, politicians, journalists, businessmen, and farmers. The Civil Court in Kishanganj was established on 30th March 2015.

Kishanganj is a town and district headquarters in Purnea Division, Bihar. It is located in the ‘Chicken Neck’ region of India, the only tea-producing district in Bihar, and borders Bangladesh, Nepal, and the West Bengal districts of Uttar Dinajpur and Darjeeling. This area connects the northeastern states of Assam, Tripura, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Sikkim.
