Latehar was established as a district on 4 April 2001, as per Jharkhand Government Notification No. 946. Before this, it was a sub-division of Palamu district since 1924, with all judicial matters being handled by the Daltonganj Judgeship. Before its separation, Latehar had three sub-divisional courts: the Court of Chief Judicial Magistrate, the Court of Sub-Divisional Judicial Magistrate, and the Court of Munsif.
The Civil Court of Latehar was inaugurated on 29 September 2001, with three more courts added: the Court of District Judge, the Court of Additional District Judge, and the Court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate. Shri Mishri Lal Choudhary was appointed the first District & Sessions Judge. Since then, the Latehar Judgeship has progressed under several eminent District & Sessions Judges, with Shri Akhil Kumar currently serving as the Principal District & Sessions Judge since 25 March 2022.
