It was formed in 1983 after the Ranchi district was divided into Ranchi, Lohardaga, and Gumla. Lohardaga serves as the administrative headquarters of the district under Ranchi Commissionerate, which comprises seven blocks: Lohardaga, Kuru, Bhandra, Caro, Kisko, Peshrar, and Senha. The district is spread over an area of 1491 sq km on the Chotanagpur plateau and is rich in bauxite, earning it the name “Bauxite City”. Before the formation of Jharkhand, Lohardaga was part of the judiciary of Bihar.
On 25 June 2001, the Lohardaga judgeship was established under the Hon’ble High Court of Jharkhand, with Shri Dilip Kumar Sinha as its first Principal District Judge. The civil court complex houses several courts, administrative offices, a mediation center, and facilities such as Lok Adalat and D.L.S.A. offices, ensuring efficient judicial functioning in the district.
