‘Emerson House’, currently accommodating the Court of District and Sessions Judge, Mandi, H.P., is one of the historical edifices in Mandi Town. Named after H. W. Emerson, Superintendent of Raja Jogindersen, this building, a masterpiece of Pahari Architecture, was constructed in 1918, with additional sections annexed to it in 1933. For decades, Emerson House remained under the authority of the Raja of Mandi, a sub-Himalayan Princely State, likely serving as a hub for his Judicial Administration.
This double-storied structure is nestled in the heart of Mandi Town, now encircled by multi-story complexes. Despite the urban sprawl, Emerson House retains its luster, standing tall with its majestic grandeur, serving as the primary venue for judicial proceedings in District Mandi.
Before 1966, the District and Sessions Judge, Sessions Division Mandi and Chamba operated from this locale. However, the reorganization of the state in 1966 brought about changes. A new Sessions Division for Mandi, Kullu, and Lahaul Spiti Districts was established, headquartered in Mandi. Subsequently, another change occurred with the creation of a separate Sessions Division for Kullu and Lahaul Spiti Districts, with its headquarters in Kullu.
