Mawkyrwat Civil Sub-Division was officially declared as a full-fledged Civil Sub-Division through the Government of Meghalaya’s Notification No. HPL.539/81/51, dated 22 June 1982. For better public convenience and administration, it was later upgraded to a full-fledged District with its headquarters in Mawkyrwat, as per the Government’s Notification dated 3 August 2012. The District is located at 25.3106° N latitude and 91.2059° E longitude.
The new District includes all the villages under two Community & Rural Development Blocks: Ranikor Community & Rural Development Block and Mawkyrwat Community & Rural Development Block, along with 18 villages from the Warsan Lyngdoh Gram Sevak Circle of Nongstoin Community & Rural Development Block, as listed in Schedule-I of the Notification.
