Peren District is home to the Zeliangs, who trace their origins to Nkuilwangdi in Manipur’s Senapati District. After consolidating British rule in Kohima by 1879, the British extended their control to the Barail ranges, where the Zeliangs, known as Kacha Nagas, lived. To strengthen their colonial administration, the British constructed link roads, including a bridle path through Khonoma to the Tening outpost in 1885.
This path was crucial in quelling the freedom movement led by Rani Gaidinliu (1931-1940). To prevent its resurgence, they maintained an outpost at Tening. Alongside political control, the British also introduced Christianity, which had a significant impact on the Naga tribes, including the Zeliangs. The Peren Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court was established in 1996, with Shri Maongkaba Imchen NJS serving as the first JMFC from January 1996 to December 1998.
