Sonepur Judgeship was formed on 23 June 2012, carved out from the Bolangir-Sonepur Judgeship, with Sonepur as its district headquarters. The first District Judge of Sonepur was Sri Niranjan Sahu. Other subordinate courts are located in Biramaharajpur, Rampur, Binka, Tarva, and Dunguripali. The name “Sonepur” is derived from “Subarnapur,” meaning “Golden City” in Sanskrit. This district, part of western Odisha, covers an area of 2284.89 sq. km. and was separated from Bolangir to form a distinct entity.
Historically, the region was ruled by dynasties like the Bhanjas, Somavamsis, Kalachuais, Gangas, and Chauhans. It later came under Balarama Deva’s rule and merged into Orissa in 1948. Sonepur is famous for its temples and rich handicrafts, including handlooms, bamboo crafts, terracotta, and brass works. The district is also known for its cultural heritage, with traditions like Danda-Nata and famous personalities like the poet Saint Bhima Bhoi.
