Ujjain district was initially part of the TAG state, with a judicial system shaped by foreign rule. In 1853, the powers of the ijaradars were abolished, and kamshadars and subas were appointed in various parganas and districts, respectively, to exercise judicial authority. By 1907, a Chief Court was established in Lashkar (Gwalior), and the Provincial Judge’s Court was set up in Ujjain with civil and criminal jurisdiction. This court had authority over cases exceeding fifty thousand rupees and served as a Court of Sessions with appellate jurisdiction, overseeing subordinate magistrates.

After India’s independence, Ujjain merged with Central India, leading to the establishment of the District and Sessions Judge Court in 1949. Initially housed in the Mahakal temple area, the court was relocated to the Kothi Mahal building in 1944. Since then, the district court and related offices, including those of the judges and police officials, have operated from this building, continuing to serve Ujjain’s legal needs.
