In 1876, the British Government designated Wokha as the District Headquarters of Naga Hills in Assam, which was later shifted to Kohima in 1878, making Wokha a Sub-Division. In 1889, the Sub-Division moved to Mokokchung, and Wokha regained its status as a Sub-Division in 1957 when Mokokchung became a district. During the first General Election in January 1964, Wokha had five Assembly Constituencies out of a total of 40 for Nagaland. The district was officially created in 1973, and the third General Election in 1974 resulted in a reduction of Wokha’s Assembly Constituencies to four, a number that remains unchanged today.
The Wokha District Court was established in 1987, with A.D.C(J) L. Sosang serving as the first Magistrate. After the separation of the Judiciary, Shri L.N. Sema took over until 2009. Shri V. Nyekha became the first District Judge, serving from 2009 to 2013, followed by Shri Hukato Swu, who is the current District and Sessions Judge.
