Zunheboto, located in the heart of Nagaland, is home to the Sumi Nagas, known as a martial tribe. The town’s name originates from the Sumi words ‘zunhebo,’ a flowering shrub common in the area, and ‘to,’ meaning hill-top, reflecting its location atop rolling hills. The district is bordered by Mokokchung to the east and Wokha to the west.
Historically, justice in Zunheboto was delivered through Customary Courts under the 1937 Rules for Administration of Justice and Police in Nagaland, with Dobashis and village elders playing key roles. The judiciary’s separation from the executive in 2007 led to the re-designation of the Additional Deputy Commissioner (Judicial) to Additional District and Sessions Judge, under the Gauhati High Court’s control. Since 2013, the district has had a District & Sessions Judge and a Civil Judge (Junior) with First Class Judicial Magistrate powers.
