Sirmaur District, formerly a Princely State, has undergone significant transformations in its judicial system over the years. In the past, under the reign of Raja Fateh Prakash, criminal cases were decided through various methods including ordeal systems like swearing by ‘Ishwar Jagan Nath’ and ‘Jal Dobani’. Civil matters were resolved in open courts known as Darbars, with the Raja presiding over proceedings conducted in Hindi.
With the accession of Raja Shamsher Prakash, reforms were initiated to align the judicial system with that of British India. Civil and Criminal Procedure Codes were introduced, marking a shift towards a more structured legal framework. Subsequent rulers, including Raja Surinder Prakash and H.H. Maharaja Amar Prakash, further refined the judicial system, adopting laws from British India while ensuring their suitability for local conditions.
Following the merger of Princely States and the formation of Himachal Pradesh, judicial infrastructure expanded. Courts were established in various towns including Nahan, Paonta Sahib, and Rajgarh to ensure accessibility to justice for the residents of Sirmaur District. Over time, specialized courts such as the Fast Track Special Court for cases of rape and POCSO were established, reflecting the evolving needs of the community.
Today, the Sirmaur Court stands as a testament to the evolution of justice in the region, providing fair and accessible legal recourse to its residents.
