The Ahmedabad City Civil Court was established under the Gujarat Act No.XIX of 1961, known as “The Ahmedabad City Courts Act, 1961”. The court became operational on 4 November 1961 at the historic Azamkhan Palace within the Bhadra Fort premises, covering an area of 16,373 square meters. The Azamkhan Sarai was constructed in 1637 during the reign of Mughal Emperor Shahjahan.

The Ahmedabad City Civil Courts operate under “The Ahmedabad City Civil Court Rules, 1961”. Shri N.K.Vakil served as the first Principal City Civil & Sessions Judge from 4 November 1961 to 15 December 1962. The courts functioned in the old historic premises until May 2014, and since April 2019, they have been operating in a new building constructed within the same precincts. This new structure was built after dismantling the old one, ensuring that the heritage elements remained undisturbed and intact.
