Angul, centrally situated, acts as a link between western and coastal Orissa. Historical records date its existence to prehistoric times. Despite colonization, Angul maintains its cultural identity. Initially a Khond feudatory kingdom, Hindu immigrants displaced them, leading to Hindu military chiefs’ dominance. The Kadamba Kings, including Raja Dhanurjjaya Singh Jagaddeva, shaped Angul’s early history. Marathas briefly ruled before British annexation in 1803, initiating the British era.
Under British rule, disputes led to intervention, resulting in the appointment of Somnath Singh as ruler. He was the final monarch, with Loknath Singh succeeding him. Angul’s history reflects native chiefs’ subjugation to British rule, with the region annexed in 1848. The district formally emerged in 1891, later becoming a separate revenue district in 1993.
Despite its recent establishment, Angul is economically significant due to extensive coal reserves, contributing substantially to state revenue. Major industries like NALCO, MCL, NTPC, and others thrive here. Natural wonders like Satakosia Gorge and cultural treasures such as the Budhi Thakurani Temple and the RavanChhaya puppet dance highlight Angul’s rich heritage. With an area of 6232 square kilometers and a population of 12.70 lakhs, Angul stands as a hub of development and tradition in Orissa.
