The Andhra State came into existence in 1954 after separating from the former Madras State. In the same year, the High Court for the Andhra State was established in Guntur, with Hon’ble Sri Justice Koka Subba Rao serving as its first Chief Justice. In 1956, the Hyderabad State and Andhra State merged to form the State of Andhra Pradesh. The High Court of Andhra Pradesh was then established in Hyderabad, with 11 Hon’ble Judges, and Hon’ble Sri Justice Koka Subba Rao remained its first Chief Justice.
The State of Andhra Pradesh underwent bifurcation in 2014, resulting in the formation of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. The High Court at Hyderabad became the Common High Court for both states on 2 June 2014, continuing its operations in Hyderabad.
The High Court for the State of Andhra Pradesh was formally established on 26 December 2018. It commenced operations from its principal seat in Amaravati on 1 January 2019, with 14 Hon’ble Judges, and Hon’ble Sri Justice C. Praveen Kumar acting as the Chief Justice during its inception.
Initially based in temporary accommodations in Vijayawada, the High Court moved to its permanent location, the Interim Judicial Complex in Amaravati, inaugurated on 3 February 2019, by Hon’ble the Chief Justice of India Sri Justice Ranjan Gogoi, alongside several dignitaries from the legal fraternity. Since 18 March 2019, the High Court has been functioning from this Interim Judicial Complex.
