The combined judgeship of Bolangir-Kalahandi began its functioning on 17 June 1948, with its headquarters at Bolangir. On 28 February 1982, the Kalahandi judgeship was separated from Bolangir. Following the declaration of Sonepur as a district, the Bolangir and Sonepur judgeships continued as one entity until 22 June 2012. On 23 June 2012, the judgeship of Sonepur was officially separated from Bolangir.
