Cuttack, established in 989 AD, is a historic city in Odisha, once the state’s capital until 1948 when it shifted to Bhubaneswar. Strategically located at the confluence of the Mahanadi and Kathajodi rivers, the city’s name originates from the Sanskrit word “Katak,” meaning a military fort, reflecting its role as a fortified military zone in ancient times. The Cuttack Judgeship, formed in 1936, initially covered vast areas including Cuttack, Balasore, Puri, and the princely state of Dhenkanal. Over time, Balasore and Puri gained their judgeships, and by 1977, Dhenkanal separated. Today, the Cuttack Judgeship serves only the Cuttack Revenue District, following the separation of Kendrapara and Jajpur in 2012.
