In 1823, Rajahmundry District was established in the Madras Presidency. In 1859, it was reorganized into Godavari and Krishna Districts. During British rule, Rajahmundry was the headquarters of Godavari District, which later split into East and West Godavari Districts in 1925. Kakinada became the headquarters of East Godavari, while Rajahmundry remained the Judicial Headquarters.
In 2015, on the occasion of Godavari Pushkarams, Rajahmundry was renamed RAJAMAHENDRAVARAM. The Principal District Court, East Godavari, established in 1804, operates with 64 courts including District, Senior Civil Judge, Junior Civil Judge, Special Magistrate, District Legal Services Authority, and Permanent Lok Adalat for Public Utility Services. Many local advocates have become judicial officers, some rising to become High Court Judges. The Principal District Judge heads both judicial and administrative wings, assisted by various staff.
The District Court has original and appellate jurisdiction, handling suits over Rs.50,00,000, motor accident petitions, and special acts. The Civil Judge (Senior Division) hears original suits between Rs.20,00,000 to Rs.50,00,000 and the Assistant Sessions Court deals with criminal cases. The Civil Judge (Junior Division) hears suits below Rs.20,00,000, with Judicial Magistrates of First Class handling criminal cases with sentences up to three years and fines up to Rs.10,000.
