The name “Paralakhemundi” originated from “Prabalakhanda,” meaning a piece of coral, which evolved. The area, once under the Madra Presidency, saw the Kalachuris occupying it in the 12th century. A prolonged war between the Gajapatis and Kalachuris lasted from 1110 to 1238, ending with the Gajapati king Ananga Bhima Deva’s victory. The first recorded Zamindar was Narasingha Deva (1245-1275 A.D.).
Maharaja Krushna Chandra Gajapati Narayana Dev, the key to Odisha’s formation, formally assumed power in 1912. Paralakhemundi’s capital shifted from Pathapatnam (now in Andhra Pradesh) between 1740-1751. The Zamindari had 726 villages and underwent significant land settlements under British rule, starting in 1790 with the Permanent Settlement Act, leading to revenue-sharing disputes that sparked local revolts.
