Local Jurisdiction about a Court or a Judge a Magistrate means the local area within which the Court or the Judge or the Magistrate may exercise all or any of its or/her powers under the Code of Criminal Procedures. Such local area may comprise the whole of the State or any part of the State, as the State Government may, by notification, specify.
The State Government of Sikkim via notification no. 54(103) Home/93/38 dated 5th July 1994 divided the entirety of Sikkim into two Sessions Divisions, one for East & North Districts and the other for South & West Districts of Sikkim with their headquarters at Gangtok.
The first Sessions Judge (East & North) was appointed via notification no. 22/HCS dated 19th July 1994. The local jurisdiction of the Ld. District & Sessions Judge (East & North) covered the entirety of the East and North revenue districts of Sikkim.
The local jurisdiction of the Ld. Chief Judicial Magistrate (East & North) comprised the entirety of the East & North districts of Sikkim. The local jurisdiction of the Ld. Judicial Magistrate (East) comprised the East district of Sikkim and the local jurisdiction of the Ld. Judicial Magistrate (North) comprised the North district of Sikkim.
