The journey of judicial administration in the Cuddapah region spans centuries, initially under the Vijayanagara Empire and later during British colonial rule. Courts were established at various levels, ranging from itinerant and stationary systems to local village tribunals, known as ‘Dharmasanas’. The advent of the British ‘Cornwallis system’ in 1802 introduced a structured hierarchy of courts, including appellate and circuit courts.
Over time, with expansion in powers and jurisdiction, the judicial system witnessed significant changes. The establishment of the District Courts in 1806 was an important moment in the legal structure of Cuddapah. Subsequently, the separation of the judiciary from the executive in 1949 led to the formation of a separate cadre of judicial magistrates to handle criminal cases.
Over the years, several courts were established to meet the growing legal demands of the region, including District Munsif Courts, Magistrate Courts, and Special courts for cases such as prohibition and excise. The growth of the judiciary also saw the creation of family courts, Lok Adalats for alternative dispute resolution and courts to address specific legislation such as the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act.
Today, the judicial landscape of Kadapa comprises an extensive network of courts, including district courts, additional district courts, and various special tribunals, ensuring accessible justice to the residents of the area.
