The District Court of Kandhamal, headquartered at Phulbani, is located 211 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar, and 246 km from the Hon’ble Orissa High Court, Cuttack. Before 1984, the Judgeship of Phulbani was part of the Ganjam-Boudh-Berhampur Judgeship. It became an independent Judgeship on 11 April 1984, having jurisdiction over the sub-divisions of Phulbani, Boudh, and Balliguda, initially managing seven subordinate courts.
Following reorganization for more effective public administration, Boudh was declared a separate district in 1994, which led to the establishment of additional courts in subsequent years. At present, the Kandhamal Bench functions from its headquarters at Phulbani and oversees taluk courts at five outstations: Balliguda (83 km away), G Udayagiri (58 km), Daringibadi (119 km), Kotagarh (130 km), and Tumudibandha (114 km).
