Latur has a rich history, having been ruled by various dynasties such as the Rashtrakutas, Satavahanas, and the Mughals. It was later part of the independent princely state of Hyderabad. After the merger of Hyderabad with India, Osmanabad became part of Bombay Province and later Maharashtra. Latur was separated from Osmanabad on 15 August 1982, forming a new district.

The Court of Assistant District Judge was established in Latur on 1st April 1959. After the creation of Latur District, a new District Court was inaugurated on 1st December 1982. Currently, the district has seven taluka courts, with District and Additional Sessions Judges located in Udgir, Ahmedpur, and Nilanga.
