Raigad and Thane shared a District and Sessions Court until 1949, when Kolaba District was established as an independent jurisdiction. Shri B.V. Manjeshwar was the first District and Sessions Judge of Kolaba. Previously, the District & Sessions Judge from Thane would hold sessions at Alibag for fifteen days each month. In 1949, Kolaba was granted a separate Sessions Division Court. Initially, the court functioned in a P.W.D. building now occupied by J.S.M. College. A new court building was constructed in 1962, which has since housed the District and Sessions Court and other judicial offices.

Raigad, formerly part of Kolaba District, was renamed in 1982 to honor Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who established his capital at Raigad, located within the district.
