During British rule, Rajkot’s Kothi Compound housed the Rajashthanik Court, with two British judges and one Indian judge. Before independence, the Judicial Commissioner’s Court, with the jurisdiction of today’s High Court, operated here. Post-independence, the Saurashtra High Court was established, with Shri M.C. Shah, a former Bombay High Court Judge, as its first Chief Justice. Barristers P.L. Chudgar and S.C. Shroff served as puisne judges. Rajkot, then the capital of Saurashtra, had district courts for Rajkot, Junagadh, Jamnagar, Bhavnagar, and Surendranagar.

In 1956, Saurashtra merged with Bombay State, and the Saurashtra High Court ceased, with the Bombay High Court’s bench visiting Rajkot monthly until Gujarat’s formation in 1960. Now under the Gujarat High Court’s jurisdiction, Rajkot is Gujarat’s fourth-largest district, with 47 judges in the district court and 24 judges across various talukas. Morbi District Court was separated from Rajkot in 2016.
