Sambalpur, known as the ‘Heart’ of western Odisha, has a rich heritage and history, particularly in the field of judiciary. In the early 20th century, the Bengal Presidency, which included Odisha, saw the establishment of the Manbhum-Sambalpur Judgeship in 1910, with its headquarters in Purulia, Bihar. Initially, the District & Sessions Judge visited Sambalpur every fortnight for the Circuit Court. Odisha came under the jurisdiction of the Patna High Court in 1916, and after the formation of Orissa as a separate state in 1936, the Sambalpur-Sundergarh Judgeship was created in 1948 under the Orissa High Court.
In 1961, the judiciary was separated from the executive, and in 1978, Sundergarh Judgeship was separated from Sambalpur. As Odisha’s districts increased, more judgeships were created. This led to the bifurcation of the Sambalpur Judgeship in 2011, with the creation of Bargarh and Jharsuguda Judgeships, followed by Deogarh in 2013.
