Before independence, there was no permanent District and Sessions Judge post in Shimla. Instead, the District and Sessions Judge from Ambala regularly held Circuit/Camp Courts at Shimla in the Collectorate building. After independence, Shimla was under Punjab State, and the District and Sessions Judge from Ambala continued to hold Camp Courts there. However, Shimla did have a permanent Court of Senior Sub Judge, cum Rent Controller, cum Judge of Small Causes, cum CJM.
Upon the formation of Himachal Pradesh on 15 April 1948, the Headquarters of District Mahasu was established at Kasumpti, with the District and Sessions Judge for Mahasu sitting there. Additionally, there was a Court of Assistant Sessions Judge, cum Senior Sub Judge at Mahasu Subordinate Judge, Kandaghat, who also held camp Courts at Shimla.
After the merger of hill areas of Punjab into Himachal on 1 November 1966, and the creation of Shimla District, the Court of District & Sessions Judge began functioning permanently in Shimla, housed in the District Collectorate building. Following reorganization in 1972, parts of Mahasu District were merged into Shimla.
Presently, Shimla hosts seven Appellate Courts, including those for Forest cases, Family Court, C.B.I., and Fast Track Special Court for RAPE/POCSO cases. The District Judiciary in Shimla includes ten Courts at the District Judicial Court Complex Chakkar and additional Courts at Taluka Court Theog, Rohru, Chopal, Jubbal, and other areas.
