Agartala is the capital of Tripura, one of the Indian states, and the second largest city in Northeast India after Guwahati. Agartala is made up of two words: ‘Agar’, a type of valuable aromatic tree, and the suffix ‘Tala’, meaning storehouse. The ‘Agar’ or ‘Agaru’ tree was abundant in this area. Agartala is situated on the banks of the Haora River and is located 2 km away from Bangladesh. It has a monsoon-influenced humid subtropical climate, with significant rainfall throughout the year. The city experiences a long, hot, and wet summer from April to October, with an average temperature of around 28 °C (82 °F), varying with rainfall. There is a short, mild winter from mid-November to early March, with mostly dry conditions and average temperatures around 18 °C (64 °F). The best time to visit here is from September to February. Summers are long, hot and humid. The Haora River flows through the city and floods during monsoons.
The present region of Tripura is mainly hilly, with a geographical area of 10,491 square kilometers. It is surrounded on three sides by the delta basin of Bangladesh, through which the Tropic of Cancer passes. Tripura is located in a geographically challenging location in India, with only one major highway, National Highway 44, connecting it to the rest of the country. The state is home to five mountain ranges: the Boromura, Atharamura, Longthrai and Jampui Hills, while the capital lies on a plain in the west. Tripura experiences a tropical savanna climate with seasonal heavy rainfall. More than half the area is covered with forests, which harbor many species found in no other Indian state. However, economic progress in the state is hampered due to geographical isolation. With limited infrastructure development, poverty and unemployment persist in Tripura. Most residents are engaged in agriculture and related activities, although the service sector is the largest contributor to the state’s GDP.
