Dungarpur, named after the “town of hillocks,” lies in southern Rajasthan between 23°20′–24°01′ N latitude and 73°21′–74°01′ E longitude. The town’s origins trace back to a Bhil settlement led by chieftain Dungaria, who was killed by Rawal Veer Singh Dev in the 14th century. Historically, the region was part of “Vagad” or “Bagar,” with Vatpadrak (now Baroda village in Aspur tehsil) as its ancient capital. In 1948, after the ruler of Dungarpur granted responsible governance, the state merged into the United States of Rajasthan, forming the Dungarpur district.

Dungarpur Judgeship was established on 1 July 1977, with Bhagwan Shrivastav as its first District & Sessions Judge. Over time, various courts were added, including the Chief Judicial Magistrate Court, Additional District & Sessions Court (Fast Track), and Gram Nyayalayas in Aspur and Bicchiwara, enhancing judicial services across the district.
