Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr) District is located on the right bank of the majestic river Sutlej, about 92 kilometers away from Chandigarh. It is bordered by four districts: Jalandhar to the west, Roop Nagar to the east, Hoshiarpur to the north, and Ludhiana and Kapurthala to the south. The town of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr) has historical roots dating back to the reign of Alaudin Khilji (1295-1316), established by his Afghan Military Chief, Nausher Khan. Initially named ‘Nausar,’ it evolved into ‘Nawanshahr’ over time. Nausher Khan built five forts, known as Havelis, remnants of which still stand today. Legend has it that settlers from Rahon migrated here due to fear of the River Satluj, transforming the area into ‘Neevan Vashon’ before it became Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar.
Established on 7 November 1995, Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr) District was formed from parts of Hoshiarpur and Jalandhar Districts on the occasion of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji’s birthday. It is part of the Jalandhar Division for administrative purposes, comprising two Tehsils: Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr) (including Banga Sub Tehsil) and Balachaur, following a decentralized administrative setup. Notably, Shaheed Bhagat Singh, the revered martyr, was born in Khat Kar Kalan village, just 7 kilometers from Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar (Nawanshahr). In tribute to his supreme sacrifice and his memory, the Punjab Government officially renamed the district Shaheed Bhagat Singh Nagar on 29 September 2008.
