In 2007, the Tapi District was established, carved out from certain Talukas of the former Surat District. Vyara serves as the headquarters of the Tapi District, which includes seven Talukas: Vyara, Songadh, Valod, Uchhal, Dolvan, Kukarmunda, and Nizar. This formation took place on 27 September 2007, as part of the bifurcation of the Surat district, leading to the creation of two separate districts: Surat and Tapi. Located in Southern Gujarat, Tapi shares its borders with the Nandurbar district of Maharashtra. Vyara, which was once ruled by the Gaekwads of the Princely state of Baroda, is now the administrative center of Tapi District. The region is predominantly inhabited by communities such as Chaudhari, Patel, Gamit, Shah, Desai, Pancholi, Panchal, Rana, and Brahmin. Notably, Amarsingh Chaudhary, the former Chief Minister of Gujarat who passed away in 2004, was born in Vyara.

Tapi district is rich in natural beauty, boasting dense forests with significant bamboo production. Some of the key attractions in the district include Fort Songadh, Hindustan Bridge, Doswada Dam, Tapi River, Ukai Dam, and Gaumukh. Suresh Joshi, a well-known writer, is among the prominent personalities from this district.
